I Love Chicago’s Bottled Water Tax — With Provisions

Apparently I was on vacation for when this went in to effect, but I (provisionally) love that Chicago is taxing bottled water at $0.05 / bottle.  This whole bottled water thing is completely out of control.  Between the plastic bottles and the sourcing from public water supplies, it’s hugely wasteful.

All I can say is that **I hope** proceeds from the tax do something useful.  $10.5 million is a lot of money, but I’m not sure how much it stands out in the $3.2 billion Daley has set for 2008.  For that money to be useful, it should be dedicated to expanding the “suburban style” recycling program sooner rather than later.

Here’s a good meta article from Chicagoist on how this has been shaping up.  Good points to the writer on how a PR machine takes advantage of lazy reporting.

A Note to My Fellow Omnivores

Fellow omnivores: yes, there are vegan restaurants.  However, just like you don’t have to be Chinese to go to a Chinese restaurant or Italian to go to an Italian restaurant, you do not have to **BE** a vegan to go to one.

Why do I bring this up?  Every time I mention Sublime to the omnivorous among us, i get the reply, “Oh, I’m not vegan.

Just thought I would let you know.
