A Special Note From My Wife

A Note from My Wife

I found this in my laptop at 5:22a.  Thanks, Sweetie.

The Law of the Jungle

The only thing better than the 25 minute walk from my River North loft office to the architectural beauty that is Chicago’s Union Station is that same walk in the rain.

Make that the driving rain. With no umbrella.

Tremendous rain with no umbrella, a strong wind, thunder, lightening, a large puddle and a driving-too-close-to-the-curb extra large SUV.

Standing there, we made eye contact, the driver of that extra large SUV and I. Just before the he drove through that large puddle. It came over me like a gritty wave, a bright streak of blue visible for just an instant through it all. High tide on the third coast.

I could swear I saw the driver mouth something just before impact, something with a ‘g’. Something like ‘gotcha’. The thunder comes a few seconds later (1, 2, 3). It takes me a moment to start moving again.

I tell my wife (or I picture myself telling my wife) and she reminds me (or whatever) of my NYC carpenter friend who lost his well hidden tools when someone ransacked the locked piece-o-sh!t Vega he left them in. Yeah his own fault–a predictable outcome. Serves him right. He might as well have given the tools away on the corner.

It’s splash or be splashed in this modern world. I committed the sin of walking too close to a large puddle and I’ll deserve my post splash wheezing pneumoniatic death. (Turns out the train had it’s AC on. The only open seat? Under a strong vent.) It’s a fair price.

Maybe.
