I wasn’t planning on being a hyper organic dad. But.

I’m not planning on being a hyper organic dad, but shopping for a crib mattress might send me over that very expensive edge. Sure, I’m a little granola, but only a little.

So how should I select a crib mattress? One site states that my most likely question will be the difference between foam and coil, which, quite honestly, I never really even considered.

Then I read Tests Reveal High Chemical Levels in Kids’ Bodies.

And if you really want to freak out read New Mattresses and Pillows Linked to Many Illnesses. Search for crib in the document.

And then I freak out just a little bit.

So it’s off to organic land I go. Barebabbies has the organic coir. (WTF is coir? Apparently it’s a coconut derivative. Whatever.)

The other site I’ve found is TheNaturalBedStore.com and their crib mattress is called the “Acorn“. (How cute it that? Get it? Acorn?) Anyway, it has a bunch of latex in it. (How common is it to be allergic to latex?) Latex surrounded by wool (allergy) surrounded by cotton.

For a price comparison, check out the Sealy at Amazon. It’s about 1/4 the cost of these. What chemicals are in it? Haven’t been able to find a listing.

Q: why do we require food to list ingredients, but not manufactured products?

OK I gotta go take the dogs for a walk.

It seems important to spare no expense. It’s rather sad that it costs more to have something manufactured with less synthetic chemicals. I’ve read about poisonous mattresses before, and I’ve thought that if when we buy a new mattress for ourselves, we’ll go for a chemical-free one.

Then there’s the furniture itself. I remember reading a couple of years ago that we’re the only industrial nation that allows formalehyde-treated wood into the country. China manufactures it, but doesn’t allow it to be sold in their own country. They ship it all to us! This wood is used in our cabinets, our furniture, everything, and it leaches into the air. It’s a known carcinogen.

Just in case you weren’t already a little freaked…

Yeah expense isn’t really an issue and I’m glad I didn’t get the Chinese crib. :) We got the furniture yesterday and it’s AWESOME. Hickory. Made in Wisconsin. Much nicer than our furniture.

Anyway the bower mattresses look cool. Thanks for the link!
